Sikt AI
a secure AI platform for education and research
Sikt AI is Norway's shared AI platform for the knowledge sector, from primary school through higher education and research. It gives institutions access to modern AI within a framework that treats privacy, security, and digital sovereignty as core principles.
We built Sikt AI on a simple idea: AI infrastructure for education and research should be shared, not rebuilt by every institution from scratch. On top of a common core, institutions build their own applications and assistants, connect their own knowledge sources, and share what they create, so work done once benefits many.
Our vision
AI is already part of the basic infrastructure of education and research. The real question is no longer whether the sector will use AI, but on whose terms: whether every institution navigates it alone, dependent on global technology providers, or the sector moves forward together on shared infrastructure it governs and trusts.
Our vision is a shared, trusted AI platform for the whole knowledge sector: a common foundation for models, data, applications, and governance, where what one institution creates, others can adopt and build on. Privacy, digital sovereignty, and responsible use are not add-ons. They are the reason to build together.
A shared foundation makes high-quality AI accessible across education and research, strengthens the sector's digital sovereignty, and gives institutions the freedom to innovate safely.
A model the sector can build anywhere
The challenge Sikt AI answers is not unique to Norway. Every country's education and research community faces the same questions: how to give students, teachers, and researchers modern AI without surrendering control over their data, their compliance obligations, or their independence from any single commercial provider.
Shared, publicly governed infrastructure is an answer that works in any national context. Sikt AI is built in the open and in dialogue with the wider European research and education community, as a model that peer organizations can relate to, learn from, and adapt to their own sector.
How it fits together
Sikt AI helps schools use AI in ways that support learning. Teachers can use the platform to plan lessons, adapt materials, create explanations, summarise content and develop AI assistants for specific subjects or tasks.
For students, Sikt AI can provide immediate support, help them explore topics, improve texts and practise responsible AI use in a safe, school governed environment.

Sikt AI Core as a shared foundation: applications are built on top, drawing on public and private language models and data sources through a single layer that manages security, compliance, and access.
How we build it
Sikt AI is developed around a few core principles.
Security and privacy by design. Trust is the foundation, handled inside the Core rather than rebuilt by each institution. The platform is built to protect users and institutions through its architecture, access control, and legal safeguards. User data is not used to train commercial language models, and the service follows GDPR and Norwegian law.
Freedom of choice. Institutions should never be locked into a single model provider. Sikt AI draws on multiple language models, public and private, and is built to connect new ones over time, so the sector keeps its options open as the technology evolves.
Built with the sector. Sikt AI is developed in continuous collaboration with teachers, digital pedagogues, researchers, and institutions, who help us test ideas, give feedback, and keep the platform pedagogically sound and practically useful.
A shared platform for innovation. Sikt AI is common infrastructure. On top of the Core, institutions can build their own applications and assistants, connect knowledge sources, and share solutions across teams and organizations, so a tool created in one place can benefit many.
Public governance and long-term trust. As a publicly governed service, Sikt AI serves the long-term needs of education and research rather than a commercial exit. Institutions can rely on a provider that is accountable to the sector and committed to it over time.
What Sikt AI enables
For schools, Sikt AI supports learning: teachers can plan lessons, adapt materials, and build subject-specific assistants, while students explore topics and practice responsible AI use in a safe, school-governed environment.
For higher education and research, it provides a secure framework for academic and administrative work: choosing between models, creating task-specific assistants, and connecting selected knowledge sources, all while institutions keep control over privacy, access, and compliance.
Talk to us
Sikt AI Core is the foundation we built so the knowledge sector would not have to build it many times over. Today it serves Norway, and we are working with partners toward offering it as a shared core that other organizations can build on, bringing their own models, data sources, and applications. If that direction is interesting for your sector, we would welcome an early conversation: kontakt@sikt.no
