Here we list all main categories with corresponding subcategories in NVA, and provide an overview of which metadata fields are specific to the different categories.

Main category and subcategory

Academic article

Aims to present new research findings based on a specific scientific investigation with peers as the primary target audience. The publication does not have its own number but is associated with a title that has an ISSN. It can have one or multiple authors, and their names are listed in association with each publication. The journal, yearbook, series, or website must have a scientific editorial board with peer review. Includes original articles and review articles but does not include editorials, book reviews, debate posts, and other content. Works in this category can count in the publication indicator (NVI) according to given criteria.

Academic review article

A second-order research article (secondary literature) that provides an overview of a scholarly question/area based on a representative selection of the field's first-order research literature (primarily research articles). The article presents a summarizing analysis/conclusion on an issue/theme intended to make it easier for researchers in the field to orient themselves regarding the major trends in research. Works in this category can count in the publication indicator (NVI) according to given criteria.

Academic monograph

A cohesive work authored by a single person or multiple individuals responsible for the entire work. The book itself is counted, not the individual chapters. A scientific monograph is a substantial publication that conveys new, research-based knowledge primarily aimed at an academic community. The publication has a title with an ISBN, and the names are associated with the title. Works in this category can count in the publication indicator (NVI) according to given criteria.

Academic commentary

An academic commentary on a text typically includes a summary and incorporation of previous research, text establishment with textual criticism, and commentary on the work as a whole and its parts. An authoritative commentary should ideally excerpt all significant research and place it in a new philological and analytical context. In the humanities, commentary editions are primarily found for biblical writings and texts within philological fields (especially Latin, Greek, Norse, Germanic, and Slavic philology). In the field of musicology, a critical edition of notes is a variant of the scientific commentary edition. The scientific and technical requirements are the same here, but the difference is that it is notes, not texts, that are commented on and reproduced in a new edition based on the scientific work undertaken. Works in this category can count in the publication indicator (NVI) according to given criteria.

Anthology

An anthology is a collection of articles where the parts are called anthology articles. Anthology articles have titles without their own ISBN but are published in connection with an (overarching) ISBN title, namely the anthology itself. Author names are linked to the title of the article.
