The Student ID mobile app functions as a student ID at student welfare organizations, public transport companies and other organizations. In this privacy statement, we describe how your personal information is processed by the organization that handles your registration data underlying the Student ID mobile app .

For the app to be valid proof that you are a student, you need to have paid the semester fee and registered at your university or college for the current semester.

Data Controller

The university or college where you are enrolled is responsible for the personal data in the app.

You can ask questions about the processing of your information in the app by contacting your university or college.

Sikt – Norwegian Agency for Shared Services in Education and Research develops and operates the Student ID mobile app on behalf of the universities and colleges that use Felles Studentsystem (FS) as a student information system.

The purpose of processing personal information

The purpose of processing personal data in the Student ID mobile app is to identify you so that you can prove that you are a student with a valid student status at a university or college in Norway to relevant third parties.

The legal basis for processing personal data

The legal basis for processing personal data in the Student ID mobile app follows from:

  • GDPR Article 6 - 1e, 3b. The processing is necessary to perform a task in the public interest or exercise public authority imposed on the controller.
  • University and college law Section 4-15. Collection and processing of personal data in student administration systems.
  • GDPR - Article 20, Personal Data Protection Act - Article 20. Right to data portability.
  • Some organizations may also have chosen to base the processing of personal data in the Student ID mobile app on consent when logging into the app.

What personal information about me is processed in the Student ID mobile app?

Your personal information is in the Student ID mobile app only after you have downloaded the app and registered at a university or college that uses the Student ID mobile app.

The Student ID mobile app will then have the following data about you:

  • your name
  • which university or college you are affiliated with
  • information about whether you have paid the semester fee
  • information about whether you are registered as an active student for the current semester
  • a picture of you (sensitive personal data) as a student ID/student card, if your university or college has registered a picture of you.

The university or college chooses what additional data can be retrieved via the barcode in the app. Depending on your university or college’s choice, the following data is also available in the app:

  • your student number
  • your student card number
  • your bibsys number (loan card and library services).

If your university or college has opened for you to consent to the use of the European Student Card, you will also be able to allow for the Student ID mobile app to share the following information with the EU service, ESC-router:

In addition, we store your activity information to provide you with user support and to be able to say something about the general use of the Student ID mobile app. We do this by storing:

  • your login method
  • how long you were logged in
  • whether you have shared your student status with a third party
  • the time the various actions were performed
  • which hardware you used (mobile brand)
  • which software (app version) you used
  • where in the world you were when you used the Student ID mobile app

Where are my personal data collected from?

Your personal data is collected from the student information system FS, which the Student ID mobile app is part of, and Feide - secure login and data sharing in education and research. If you have been assigned a European student ID, it is created in IAM - common identity and access management.

Are my personal data disclosed to other parties?

The Student ID mobile app is made so that you yourself can share your student status with the third parties you want. Sikt - Norwegian Agency for Shared Services in Education and Research makes both FS, the Student ID mobile app and Feide, and has access to your personal information in order to provide user support and error correction in the relevant systems. In addition, Sikt can also disclose or export data containing your personal data to other data processors, if necessary for the Student ID mobile app to work.

Your personal data can, in addition to Sikt, be disclosed to the following parties/organizations:

  • USIT at the University of Oslo (UiO) to be able to perform operations and error correction in the service.
  • ESC-router if you have consented to share your data to get a European student ID (ESC - European Student Card).

Are my personal data transferred to, or processed in countries outside the EU/EEA?

Your personal data will not be disclosed to countries outside the EU/EEA, or international organizations, unless you have consented to this by sharing your student status with such entities.

For how long are my personal data stored, and how are they deleted and archived?

Your activity information is stored locally on your phone, and you can delete it whenever you wish. If you delete the app, you also automatically delete data in the app. Your university or college will still keep your personal data and registration data related to your studies in order to fulfill its educational mission.

Feide can store activity information related to your login for up to six months.

How do you secure my personal data in the mobile student ID?

Sikt - Norwegian Agency for Shared Services in Education and Research conducts risk and vulnerability analyses, and regularly tests the security of the Student ID mobile app to protect your personal data.

The Student ID mobile app has the following built-in security measures:

  • All transfers to and from the Student ID mobile app are encrypted.
  • Data stored locally on your phone is encrypted, except for the picture.

What are my rights as a user of the Student ID mobile app?

As long as we process information about you, you have the right to:

  • Access to which personal data is registered about you, and to receive a copy of the data.
    • The right of access is largely taken care of through the self-service solution in the Student ID mobile app, where after logging in you can see your personal data and student status.
  • Correct information about you that is incorrect.
    • Note that we collect information about student status and personal info from data registered at your university or college. If you believe the Student ID mobile app shows incorrect or incomplete information, please contact the relevant educational organization. It is always important that you justify and document why you believe information is incorrect or incomplete..
  • Receive data in a machine-readable format (data portability).
    • The Student ID mobile app is primarily developed to give you the right to data portability for your own result status.
  • Protest against the processing.
    • The right to protest against the processing is conditional and only applies to the exercise of public authority or if information is to be used for marketing. This is not the case for the Student ID mobile app.
  • Limit processing under certain conditions.
    • You decide for yourself whether you want to share your student status further from the Student ID mobile app. In this way, you can limit the processing of your personal data by not sharing them further to third parties for a period.
  • File a complaint with the Norwegian Data Protection Authority about the processing of your personal data.

Is it voluntary to provide my personal data to the Student ID mobile app?

It is voluntary to download and use the Student ID mobile app. Most universities and colleges still allow you to order a semester receipt on paper.

Will my personal data be used for automatic case processing in the Student ID mobile app?

No, but if you choose to share data from the Student ID mobile app, it can be included in case processing or profiling in other systems with your consent.
