You must cite when using data from the Surveybanken
Just like with publications, you must cite the data you use from the Surveybanken.
All datasets have a DOI (Digital Object Identifier). It is a web address that will never disappear. When the DOI is included in the reference list, others will be able to find the dataset – forever. More about DOI further down the page.
How to cite datasets
The Surveybanken creates ready-made references for you. You can choose between different citation styles and easily copy or download the citation in formats such as Endnote, RIS, and BibTex.
It is good practice to cite data both in the text and in the reference list.
You will find the link to the citation generator when you are on a dataset, under "Citation of data" and under Documentation.
How to Cite Graphs and Tables
All analyses in the Surveybanken have a web address (link). When you use graphs or tables you can cite them by including the link. You copy the link from the address field in the browser.
Additionally, you should add the DOI of the dataset, as it is a permanent link that will always work.
Why You Must Cite Data
Citing data is as obvious as citing an article or a website or an image.
- Reproduce analyses and results: By citing a dataset you have used, you give others the opportunity to reproduce your findings.
- Recognition of work: Citing datasets gives recognition to those who have collected, organized, and disseminated the dataset, in the same way as citing a book or article.
- Increased visibility and more use of data: Citing makes data more visible and can help researchers discover data they did not know existed.
What is a DOI (Digital Object Identifier)?
A DOI is a permanent address that will always work. If a dataset is moved, the DOI will point to the new address.
An example of a DOI link is:
https://doi.org/10.18712/NSD-NSD3152-V7
This will forever point to the School Election Survey in 2023.
Note that datasets can have different versions. For example, a new version may be released if errors are discovered, if more units are added, etc. For datasets in the Surveybanken, the last part of the DOI - here "V7" - indicates that this is version 7 of this dataset.
