Towards a Coherent Ecosystem for Open Research in Europe
The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is a European initiative for open research. Its goal is to develop an ecosystem for researchers that enables FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) research data, along with various tools and services.

EOSC will provide seamless access to data and services and establish standards for exchange and integration. In October, the first step in this offer was launched, the EOSC EU Node.
Platform and Infrastructure
The EOSC EU Node is a platform and infrastructure that supports research across disciplines and national boundaries, in Europe and the rest of the world. The platform offers user-friendly tools that support research processes and workflows for planning, conducting, and disseminating research. The node is intended to be an infrastructure that opens opportunities and provides access to services in data management and storage, computation and analysis, and data transfer and exchange.
With the EOSC EU Node, researchers can, among other things:
- Find, access, and use millions of scientific publications and data.
- Find and access free services and tools from research infrastructures, technology providers, international research collaborations, and more.
- Create teams and collaborate to put Open Science principles into practice.
The platform supports users at all stages of the research process and promotes collaboration and innovation across Europe. The idea is that the EOSC EU Node will serve as a template for establishing similar platforms within various research and service areas.
FileSender provided by Sikt
Sikt is part of the consortium that will deliver application services for data management, together with, among others, our Swedish sister organization Sunet and the Nordic cooperation NORDUnet. Sikt's main contribution is to provide FileSender as a service to EOSC.
FileSender is a service for secure transfer of large files, developed through an international collaboration in which Sikt has been a key participant. Sikt already delivers FileSender to Norwegian research and higher education. Now, the delivery will be scaled up to cover the EOSC. This will provide economies of scale and broader application possibilities, including new integrations.
Sikt contributes significantly to the EOSC collaboration
In addition to participation in the consortium that will deliver data management services, Sikt has also contributed to the work on integrating data between research disciplines, and has been involved in leading a working group for sustainable financing.
Norwegian data archives and research services will be linked to the EOSC community. Sikt's active participation in the design and operationalization of EOSC means that we can influence the design with Norwegian needs in mind. Through our participation, we will build competence in delivering services to a larger European community. The ambition is for Norwegian researchers to have easy and seamless access to data and services at both the national and European level.
Together with its subsidiary Sigma2, Sikt will explore further ways to connect Norwegian research to EOSC, for example by establishing a separate Norwegian node in the ecosystem.
